Creating a cozy nook for staying indoors

The weather outside is in full fall mode and with earlier nights and darker days, you may just want to stay in and bundle up. If you’re planning on hibernating for the next few months, make yourself the perfect cozy nook for rainy weekends where you can curl up with a good book or your next Netflix binge and leave the bad weather behind!

Location is everything! When creating a dedicated spot for relaxation, try to find a corner of your home that is slightly removed from the hustle of the kitchen and entryways. If you think you’ll be using your spot for a lot of reading or intensive craft work, try to be near natural light to reduce the strain on your eyes.

The most important part of your nook is the seating where you’ll be curling up on long winter nights. Find a cozy armchair to move into the spot, and pick firm cushions for comfort and support. If you’re a little tight on space for a full chair, consider a large floor cushion that can be easily moved and even provide an extra seating option when guests are over.

Natural light is always the best option, especially if you’ll be straining your eyes reading or getting through one more episode. But since the sun sets early, opt for a floor lamp that curves over your shoulder, giving you all the direct light you need. For a cozy ambience, choose a warm colour light bulb, and a cream coloured lampshade. And if you want to add some decoration, string lights always provide a whimsical touch, and are perfect for the holiday season.

The weather had dipped and you need to stay warm, so pick a good blanket! If you opted for natural light then you might be colder near your window, so have a good fleece blanket nearby, preferably more than one. A soft basket is a great storage option for these, but you can use a throw blanket to add a pop of colour to your nook and keep it draped over your seat when not in use.

Chances are you’ll be cozying up with a mug of something warm, so have a flat surface nearby where you can easily set things down for convenience. An end table is a great option, but if you’re in a tight corner a smaller laptop desk will give you the same result while still being easy to tuck away. Also consider a rolling bar cart, which will let you store books or craft supplies to be moved in or out whenever you need them.
